Poppy Day

This year I bought a poppy. That's nothing unusual, surely. But this year I actually felt I should buy one, rather than being coerced into it by the poppy seller. It seemed to be the right thing to do, possibly to salve my conscience at the thought of all the men and women so needlessly killed and injured in recent years at the bidding of our elected leaders.

Unfortunately there is not much that I can do to undo what has happened, but I can perhaps make myself feel a little better about it.

If all the billions spent on recent wars had been spent on improving the lot of some of our own underprivileged citizens, then maybe some of them would think a little more kindly of us and perhaps not want to blow us all up. Sadly too many human beings seem programmed to fight; I just wish that it was not so.

Brown Hare

A recent stay in North Devon was brightened by this regular visitor to the cottage we were staying in.

The Hart's Tongue Fern

The Hart's Tongue Fern
So called because it looks like a tongue! And what's more a hart's tongue, or a deer to you and me.
They always amaze me with their ability to grow pretty much anywhere.

Devon Otter Sanctuary

A wonderful place to be able to get close and personal with the animals is the Buckfast Butterflies and Devon Otter Sanctuary. The aim of the sanctuary is to be able to return the animals to the wild after a period of recuperation although some have become permanent residents and seem quite happy with there lot.

Otters being what they are provide great entertainment, but you do have to be prepared for a pretty strong whiff as they are great ones for marking their territory.

Animals we have known

Over many years we came to know and love many pets. Here are some of them.

Bertie was one of the best, but had a mind of his own

Bruno loved hunting best of all.

Cleo loved to tempt the unwary

Ella - who needs a hankie?

Leckie - the moggie from next door

Sheba - loved everyone

Trudy with the world's problems on her mind

Jackie - my first dog, and deaf as a post

Squibs - my first cat, loved malt
