Silly Season

It seems to be that time of the year when strange, unexpected things happen. One of the strangest, and indeed most enjoyable, from an Anglophile point of view is watching the French struggle with their consciences over whether they want to continue to be proper Europeans. It would seem that they don't, but being French, are not quite ready to give the ball back and let the rest get on with some sort of sensible organisation.

While I was out in our garden the other day I took a few photographs which I thought I might post here in tribute o our Gallic neighbours. This first has just come up for air and is reflecting upon what might have been.

Here we see one trying to out stare us, daring us to do something that they wouldn't like.

Trying another approach, this one turns his back and tries to pretend that nothing has really changed.

There is safety in numbers and here we see a display of solidarity in the face of adversity.

I trust that this has not upset the entente cordiale too much. I am sure that they will be able to take comfort from the fact that the Dutch have now joined them, so they need not feel too much alone. The Dutch decision to reject the Constitution was always to be expected to my mind, although their politicians seem to have missed the point somewhere. At least all this may avoid the need for we Brits to put the boot in at some point in the future!

Our weather is still not quite able to make up it's mind about which season it is really supposed to be. One recent bit of summer tempted me out into the garden to see what else had decided to risk it, and I found a few flowers prepared to take the chance.
